Day 7...the rains arrive again!

The weather looked a bit more menacing this morning – good news. Not such good news though when at 8.00am we arrived at the car park of the Kayaloram to find…no bus. However, a quick call from Mr. Friendly at reception and our bus was there within seconds. Now that’s efficiency…

On arrival the verandah boys were again called away to sort out some scaffolding. Their favourite builder, ‘Nigel’, also left with them. The rest of us headed to the house site. The guys had been busy and the walls were now approaching the requisite 12 feet. What was needed today was…you guessed it…bricks. Lots of bricks. Resigned to a morning of moving little red blocks we got started. Within seconds the heavens opened in a big way, but this rain was seriously refreshing and everyone, especially Tom Over, loved it. We had tea in one of the new house rooms. Drenched through we worked through the morning, building up bricks, carting sand and also lending a hand here and there to lay some cement shelves. We also had some help from more of Jai’s relatives: two youngsters from the US. Just before lunch Johan found a baby snake in the ever-diminishing brick pile and we all crowded round for a look. Being accustomed to having snakes as pets, Ben was keen to pick up the snake and let it run through his fingers. No one could decide whether it was a harmless python or a lethal cobra, so after a bit we did the sensible thing and let it go, but only after a lot of photos!

After lunch some of the group stayed at Jai’s to build a raft from the banana tree logs and the rest of us put in another hour and a half at the site. After more layers were added and Hughes lost in a ‘who’s got the best guns competition with the two head masons’, we trooped back for a swim. The raft was good, but not great, and just managed to stay afloat with two aboard! A few more of us did some river swinging before tea. We all managed to get the dance right today, in between bouts of giggles, with only the speedy part of the stick dance eluding us, and we bussed off home satisfied with another good day.

A full working week complete. Two half days and one full day remaining of building before the travels begin…
